In what must be termed as London's Wedding of the Year, retired Major Twaha Mukiibi finally wed his long-time partner Rehema over the weekend.
Major Mukiibi, formerly of the Uganda Freedom Army (UFM) and National Resistance Army (NRA) wed Rehema at a colourful ceremony held at the Tottenham Mosque in North London attended by hundreds of well wishers.
Among the many dignitaries who attended the wedding, was former Minister of State for Defence Mr Peter Otai and the former Commander of Bombo Military Barracks Lt. Col John Ogole. Lt Joseph Tomusange (ret.) was best man.
In his speech, Col Ogole paid tribute to Maj. Mukiibi's steadfastness and service to his country Uganda and to the United Kingdom where his son is currently serving in Afghanistan in the British Army. On his part Mr Otai praised Mukiibi's spirit of love and unity that made it possible to invite at his wedding Ugandans from different walks of life.
The couple entertained their guests at a lavish party at the Trivoli Club in Tottenham where over 500 guests were seated and dined in unbelievable comfort. The party went on until the morning hours of Sunday with every guest dined until they could have no more and given drinks right until the last guest left.
The party was almost brought to a halt when Muslim clerics invited to officiate at the wedding objected to alcoholic drinks being served to guests and threatened to stage a public walk-out. The matter was resolved quickly when Maj. Mukiibi intervened and explained to the clerics that his guests came from all religions in Uganda and that it would be unfortunate not to allow them to enjoy his wedding in a way they saw fit. The clerics later dropped their threats and the partying continued. Twaha and Rehema have been living together in London since they fled Uganda 22 years ago.
