Opposition leaders in Buganda have launched an intensive campaign against the ruling National Resistance movement with a view of deposing it in the run up to next year's general elections. Speaking at the launching ceremony on Tuesday at Christ the King hall in Kampala, former Buganda Katikkiro Mulwanyammuli Ssimwogerere accused President Museveni of being a liar and an opportunist. According to Mulwannyammuli, ever since he took a decision to mobilise against the NRM and Mr. Museveni, he has been encouraged by many people including many people from within Mr. Museveni's party.
"Senior cadres are calling me expressing support to my decision, they are waiting to see what will come out and they will join" said Ssimwogerere. According to Ssimwogerere, everybody wants change throughout the country and it will be a matter of time before many senior people will join the Suubi taskforce.
The former Katikkiro also attacked President Museveni for his recent remarks against Mengo officials who joined the opposition IPC as opportunists. Who is an opportunist? An opportunist is someone who is in NRM where money is; not me in opposition where there's no money. Also National Resistance Movement spokesperson Karooro Okurut has recently said the move was expected. According to her Mengo has always held cordial relations with members of the opposition.
Ssuubi 2011 is a popular civic effort spearheaded by Buganda opposition leaders that aims to mobilize the grassroots to revive hope in the electoral process and cause non-violent, peaceful change through the ballot box. The group is coordinated by former Mengo information Minister Medard Lubega Sseggona and led by a steering commitee composed of main stream opposition leaders from Buganda including Mukono North MP Betty Nambooze, Kampala Central MP Erias Lukwago, Dr Lulume Bayiga and Mathias Mpuuga among others. People Development Party President Dr. Abed Bwanika who had shunned the Inter-Party Cooperation has also joined the Ssuubi 2011 project. The group has vowed to traverse all areas of the Kingdom and will identify and support individuals who will represent the Kingdom's interests. According to Sseggona, the group will ally with all bonafide and legitimate forces of change in Uganda. Already the group is working hand in hand with the Opposition Inter-Party Cooperation
